More than 500,000 customers in New England
were left without power after an intense storm
began its path over the Northeast on Oct. 16. .
The storm caused wind gusts of up to
90 mph, which dislodged trees and snapped
utility poles throughout the region. .
Various areas have reported closed roads
and train routes due to downed trees and wires.
In Maine, two cruise ships were forced to seek
shelter in Portland Harbor due to the storm. .
Described as a “bomb cyclone,” this particular storm
occurred due to a dramatic drop in atmospheric pressure.
According to meteorologist Benjamin
Sipprell, the storm’s atmospheric
pressure dropped from 1000 millibars
to 974 millibars as it progressed.
The “bomb cyclone” will continue to bring
heavy rain and gusty wind through Oct. 17,
before moving north into Canada on Oct. 18.
