A homemade bomb was detonated in Hong Kong on Sunday (October 13) in an escalation of long-running protests.

The device was reportedly hidden in a bush and triggered by a mobile phone as a police car drove by in the Mong Kok district.

Video filmed at around 7:30pm local time on Sunday (October 13) shows remains of the device and a throng of journalists.

"Journalists rush to the scene as the first improvised explosive device ever explodes at the passage of police vans on Nathan Road, in Mong Kok," wrote the filmer. "Police have asserted that their agents were on patrol on foot, whereas from this video taken immediately after the scene, it is obvious all of them were still in their vehicles."
