In-depth: Global market wrap-up

2019-10-08 8

Time now for an in-depth look at the market news today.
And for that, I'm joined on the line by Dr. Kim Young-Han, professor of Economics at Sungkyunkwan University.
Dr. Kim, thank you for coming on this afternoon.
Thank you.
We saw earnings from Samsung Electronics today for the third quarter. Down by more than half compared to last year, but still beating market expectations. What do you make of these results, and with Japan's export curbs still in place, what should be Samsung's strategy?
Preliminary figures from the Bank of Korea show the current account with a surplus in the goods account, but the smallest seen in more than 5-and-a-half years. Why the small surplus and what should we look for in these numbers?
From this Thursday, the U.S. and China are resuming their trade tralks. It seems like President Trump has something big in mind, but China expecting less to come out of it. The calculus for both sides more complicated with the Hong Kong situation and Trump's own troubles at home. Markets are up and down. With just a couple of days to go is there something we should really be paying attention to?
Alright, Dr. Kim.
Thanks so much for your insights today.
We appreciate it.
