South Korean universities will soon be allowed to set up campuses abroad.
The education ministry said today it's going to pass a regulation as soon as next year allowing them to do that.
Campuses overseas will be able to open departments and enroll students in them whether or not they have corresponding departments in Korea.
Until now, universities could not go abroad because there was no legal mechanism under which they could do so.
The ministry expects this will enable South Korean universities to open up in Southeast Asia and boost their global competitiveness.
