Merriam-Webster Officially Recognizes
‘They’ as Singular Pronoun
While adding 553 new words to its online dictionary,
Merriam-Webster recognized “they” as
a singular, non-binary pronoun. This decision holds significant meaning
for the non-binary community, as Merriam-Webster
is the oldest dictionary publisher in America. The use of “they” as a singular pronoun has
often been met with heavy criticism by those
who claim it isn’t “grammatically correct.” However, according to Merriam-Webster, the use of “they”
as a singular pronoun dates back to the late 1300s. Via Merriam-Webster's ‘Words We’re Watching’
