From the band's 1968 album Waiting For The Sun, this is track 4 from Side Two. A beautiful rock ballad written by Robby Krieger and one of the few songs recorded by The Doors featuring piano rather than organ. There are a number of interpretations, although the most popular over the years is that it concerns suicide by drowning.
It is for this reason I have taken the concept a step further to function as a possible dedication to the L'Inconnue de la Seine (The Unknown Woman of the Seine). A death mask taken from the drowning victim believed to have committed suicide, a young woman who was never identified, became a popular fixture on the walls of artists' homes after 1900. The L'Inconnue death mask influenced many artists and writers and, for a time, her look was copied by models and actresses. The song, in any event, works wonderfully with the concept.
