annoucned the death of the divisive
first prime minister of the country via Twitter. Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe President Mugabe once famously
proclaimed that "only God"
could oust him
from office. He was deposed
by a coup in 2017. After leading a successful guerrilla war
against the white-minority government
in 1980, Mugabe was initially hailed as
a hero by the people of Zimbabwe. His legacy came to be marked
by shady elections, corruption,
violence and human rights violations. Having led Zimbabwe
for 37 years, Mugabe was
rarely seen after he was deposed.
