Did you know that sea water contains an average of 1 ounce of salt per liter of water?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's start the project to learn more:
You Need:
----------------------------
2 Glasses
Table Salt
1 Spoon
2 Raw Eggs
Water
Challenge:
----------------------------
Egg float or sink and Why?
Directions:
----------------------------
1. Fill the glasses halfway up with water.
2. Put 9 Spoons of table salt into one of the glasses.
3. Mix the water and salt together well.
4. Put one of the eggs in the glass that only has fresh water in it and put the other egg in the glass with the salty water.
Result:
----------------------------
You will see that in the glass containing only fresh water, the egg sinks whereas the other egg floats in the salty water.
Reason:
----------------------------
We float better in salty water because salty water is heavier than fresh water. In fresh water, the egg sinks when it's put into the glass because it's heavier than the water it displaces. When the egg is put into the glass with salty water, it floats because it's lighter than the water it displaces.
