As it happened: Hong Kong citywide strike brings chaos and gridlock

Hong Kong was gripped by commuter chaos on Monday, August 5, 2019, as transport systems including the MTR railway and international airport were disrupted by anti-government protests and street violence.  Demonstrators fought with police, who fired over 800 rounds of tear gas and made more than 140 arrests during violent clashes in at least 10 districts across the city.
