Idris Elba Shares What Drew Him to Playing a Villain

Idris Elba says the originality of “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” villain Brixton is what drew him to the role.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a Black Terminator, robot, soldier-y guy with a grill,” he joked. “I don’t think I’ve seen that combination of villains, so, you know, I decided that it would be a unique version.”

Brixton is an MI6 agent-turned-supervillain, hell-bent on obtaining a lethal virus and infecting all of humanity.

“What intrigued me about the character was that he’s a robot and a man,” Elba said. “And it was pretty badass, you know what I mean. Like, he could fight, he ain’t scared of nothing. I kind of wanted to find a way to make that character, you know, sort of believable and fun to play.”

Though people of color have been historically unfairly typecast as villains, Elba instead chose to look at the role as an opportunity to take on a role that hasn’t been on the big screen before.

“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” will be widely released on August 2 and also stars action icons Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham, reluctantly teaming up to take on Elba’s villain
