The finance ministers of the Group of Seven countries say they've "agreed in principle" to tax digital tech giants such as Google and Facebook on their offshore income.
In a meeting outside Paris on Thursday, the finance chiefs reached a consensus on what they called "a minimum level of effective taxation" the tech giants should pay.
However, an actual rate wasn't decided.
France hailed that agreement, but the U.S. stressed that more work needs to be done.
Earlier this month, France's parliament passed a law that will tax tech giants on income earned in countries other than their home country.
The U.S. reacted by complaining that the law discriminates against U.S.-based firms, such as Amazon and Apple.
