US Retailers Shutting Down at Faster Rate This Year Than in 2018 New figures from data company
Coresight Research say just over
7,000 stores have shut down in 2019. In all of last year, 3,258 U.S. retail stores opened up with 5,864 closing down. The new numbers from Coresight
are particularly striking as it is
only mid-July in 2019. Some of the big retail chains that downsized this year
include Payless ShoeSource. This past February, the company announced that 2,600 locations
would shut down. In addition, just under 750 stores
have been closed by clothing
retailer Gymboree. 661 spots have also been
closed this year by women's
clothing chain Dressbarn. Gymboree has declared bankruptcy while Dressbarn is closing up shop for good.
