I hadn't been making videos very long when, in the summer of 2012, Freeport McMoRan gave the community of South Bisbee notice of eviction. When I took my camera through the tunnel into that little enclave, I did not guess that my clumsy, filmed-on-the-spot videos would form the only record of a time and place that is gone: Mrs. Mabel Farley, who came to South Bisbee as a young wife and had lived there for 63 years; Ralph, who drew parallels with the Bisbee Deportation of 1917; David and his 40 years' worth of wild gardens; Sara, who spoke her mind and still lives in South Bisbee's last remaining house; Steve and Ardella’s dream home; Bruce and Marilyn's Hippie Mansion. And Heide - the one who came to be called The Hero - who refused to sign Freeport's relocation agreement and became the catalyst for giving South Bisbee another whole year...and who would become the very last person to leave. Sara has been after me for years to weave my year's worth of videos into a cohesive story; and this one deserves to be told. So here are my efforts so far: South Bisbee Goodbye Part 1: Summer 2012.
