A one-year-old boy had to be rescued after his mother accidentally locked him in the family car.

Trirat Phanngern, 22, was visiting a hospital on Sunday (July 7) just before midnight when she parked up and left the car to open the boot.

But after unloading some of her bags, the car door slammed shut behind her - trapping the toddler, named Smart, locked inside.

Firemen arrived at 1am and used oxygen tank to pump air into the car through a gap in the rear window, while the youngster scampered around inside the car oblivious to the panic outside.

Rescuers eventually freed Smart after more than one hour when they managed to prise open the driver's side door.

The relieved mother said: ''I had taken my son to the doctors because he had a fever. I left the car and took some things out. The key was still in the engine.

''The door closed behind me and all four doors were locked. The keys were inside so I couldn't use the central locking.

''I'm so thankful that everybody could help to get my son out without him being hurt.''
