Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich asserts in an op-ed published by Fox News on Friday that Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to "destroy America as we have known it." He specifically references the congresswoman's recent "visit to the border" and notes that event helped him "understand how profoundly vicious, cruel and dishonest she is." Gingrich goes on to state that "Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow left-wing activists continue to send signals to desperate and ambitious people around the world that they can (and should) enter the United States illegally." "These signals are simply increasing the pressure on the border and overwhelming the Americans who are working to protect and control our national boundaries," he continues. Notably, following her Monday visit to Texas detention centers, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: "People (are) drinking out of toilets, officers laughing in front of members Congress. I brought it up to their superiors. They said 'officers are under stress & act out sometimes.' No accountability." The next day, the Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General released a report about the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions at a number of facilities along the U.S-Mexico border. The OIG reported that "most single adults had not had a shower in CBP custody despite several being held for as long as a month…[and were] wearing the clothes they arrived in days, weeks, and even up to a month prior."
