첫 폭염경보에 온열질환자 증가...더위 주말에도 기승할 듯

The first heatwave warnings of the year were in effect in Seoul, as well as Gyeonggi-do Gangwon-do provinces today. Heat-related illnesses were reported, and health authorities are advising people to keep hydrated and to avoid outdoor activities.
Yoon Jung-min reports.
The first heatwave warnings of the year were issued on Friday with temperatures reaching over 30 degrees Celsius nationwide. Some parts of the country saw temperatures go as high as 35 degrees Celsius, and Saturday is forecast to be even hotter.
Heatwave warnings are issued when daily highs above 35 degrees Celsius are expected to last for more than two consecutive days. The heatwave is expected to last over the weekend, with the mercury soaring to 35 degrees Celsius in central areas.
"I didn't go out for a couple of days. I'm out today, but it's too hot. The weather makes me sweat and it feels unpleasant."
"Here in the capital Seoul, temperatures soared to 35 degrees Celsius during the daytime, but many felt even hotter than that due to the urban heat island effect."
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 199 cases of heat-related illness have been reported as of Thursday, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Symptoms include muscle cramps, exhaustion, excessive sweating, dizziness or headaches. When symptoms occur, patients should see a doctor and take some rest.
Health authorities advise people to stay hydrated and wear light, loose-fitting clothing to keep them cool. People should avoid outdoors activities or excessive workouts during the daytime.
