This Day in
History: Amelia
Earhart Disappears July 2, 1937 The famous American
aviator was attempting to
fly around the world with
navigator Frederick Noonan. They were reported
missing near the tiny
Howland Island
in the Pacific Ocean. Earhart had gained fame as
the first woman to conduct a
solo trans-Atlantic flight and a
solo, non-stop flight across the U.S. Just before going missing,
Earhart breifly communicated
with Coast Guard ship Itasca
that she was low on fuel. No trace of the
Lockhead plane she was
flying or of Earhart or
Noonan has ever been found. Numerous conspiracy
theories explaining Earhart's
disappearance have
circulated for decades.
