Sit down with Professor Professor An Jun-seong on DMZ meeting

2019-07-01 14

This weekend's mini-summit between the leaders of North Korea and the U.S. was enough to gather media attention all across the globe... but now, the real question is will the summit actually be a meaningful step toward peace on the Korean peninsula?
For an in-depth look at all this, we're now joined by Professor An Jun-seong... of Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies.
Welcome to the program.

Good to be here.

1- So first and foremost, how did this spontaneous third Kim-Trump summit come about.... and what came out of the meeting in regards to denuclearization?

2- But the bigger question is whether their respective governments, between now and then, will finally be able to work out what they mean by denuclearization.... because it seems the two sides still have a gap to close when it comes to that term.

3- In your opinion, is North Korea serious about denuclearization, or is it just trying to buy some time to gain acceptance or even international recognition that it has joined the club of nuclear powers?

4- President Moon Jae-in was NOT able to join in the meeting and this Panmunjeom encounter ended up being a bilateral summit between North Korea and the U.S., not a trilateral one.
Did we see this coming and what could this mean?

5- How did China and other neighboring countries react to the Kim-Trump encounter?
How will other countries play their part as North Korea and the U.S. restart their negotiations?

6- What are the chances that we could see the next meeting between Kim and Trump happen at the White House?

Thank you so much for your insight today.
