After assessing North Korea's food shortages, the World Food Programme says so-called 'hidden hunger' and micro-nutrient deficiencies are the real crisis.
James Belgrave, one of the WFP officers that visited the North last month for an on-site assessment, wrote on the UN agency's website that North Koreans' diets are largely limited to rice and kimchi or eggs far from a balanced and nutritious diet.
He added... what mothers and children eat during the first 1,000-day window from conception to the child's second birthday has a life-long impact on a child's growth, but mothers struggle every day to find enough food.
Belgrave said that, regardless of the geopolitical situation, humanitarian work in the North should be allowed to go ahead unimpeded.
