Study Links Weight Gain in
Women to Sleeping With Lights On According to a new study published in
JAMA Internal Medicine, there may be link between
increased risk of weight gain and certain sleeping habits. The study, called the “Sister Study,” was conducted
between 2003 and 2009 with 43,722 women between
the ages of 35 to 74 in the United States. It required the women to log their sleeping habits,
such as sleeping with a light or television on,
as well as their body mass index (BMI). Throughout the five-year period, researchers
found that light exposure during sleep was
associated with various forms of weight gain. Women had a 17% chance of gaining
five kilograms, a 22% chance of becoming
overweight and a 33% chance of becoming obese. According to senior investigator Dale Sandler,
“the more light in the room the stronger the association.” Dale Sandler, via CNN
