As the race to succeed British Prime Minister Theresa May is under way, Boris Johnson, former London mayor and ardent critic of May's Brexit strategy, said he will run for the Conservative Party leadership when she steps down.
May's exit timetable will be decided after the House of Commons votes on her Brexit bill early next month.
May's withdrawal agreement with the EU has been deeply unpopular, being rejected three times by Parliament.
Johnson currently has the support of grassroots Conservative members but he will face stiff opposition as several senior Conservatives are expected to also throw their hats into the ring.
