Sri Lankan police confronted a crowd of angry protesters following the arrest of dozens who allegedly took part in a series of attacks on Muslim communities on Tuesday (May 14).

Footage shows police officers trying to control a mob of angry protesters who tried to enter a police station to release the people arrested.

Mobs attacked at least one mosque and several shops in the North Western province of Minuwangoda, with attackers throwing petrol bombs, stones and iron bars, according to reports.

The attacks on Muslim-owned houses and shops are an apparent reprisal for last month's Easter Sunday bombings that killed more than 250 people.
