The World Press Freedom Day annual event organized by the UN took place in Ethiopia in recognition of the extraordinary turn around of press freedoms in the country following the election of Dr Abiy Ahmed. 110 is the position of Ethiopia on the annual global World Press Freedom Index of 2019 published by Reporters Without Borders. This unprecedented rise of 40 places in the rankings is due to the release of all jailed journalists–a ray of hope after 2018 was marked as the worst year on record for journalists with more than 300 journalists jailed and 80 killed.
