Lotte Chemical has become the first South Korean company to open a large-scale petrochemical complex in the U.S.
Lotte Chemical's new plant in Lake Charles, Lousiana will use shale gas to make ethalyne.
It's what's called an ethane cracker, whose products are used to make plastics.
The company says the plant can make up to one million tons of ethylene and 700-thousand tons of ethylene glycol a year.
Among the attendees at Thursday's opening ceremony were South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon and U.S. President Donald Trump's Deputy Assistant, Sylvia May Davis, who delivered a letter from the president.
In his letter, Trump said (quote) "this is exactly the type of investment the United States wants to celebrate, that we want to see more of."
