문 대통령, "시스템반도체 성공으로 미래 선도",... 2030 년까지 종합반도체 강국 도약
We begin with President Moon's rare visit to a Samsung plant... The president has emphasized his administration’s push to foster growth in the non-memory chip sector… touting its great growth potential in the near future.
His visit is seen as part of efforts to reduce the Korean economy's reliance on memory chip-led industries.
Our presidential office correspondent, Shin Se-min starts us off.
President Moon has big plans to boost the system semiconductor industry that is, non-memory chip to promote the sector as a future economic growth engine for the country.
Speaking during a ceremony held at Samsung Electronics’ Nano City campus in Hwaseong for non-memory chip business, the president said he wants to make Korea a comprehensive semiconductor power.
“Our goal is clear. It is to leap to the status of a comprehensive semiconductor power by becoming No.1 in the system semiconductor foundry sector and maintaining 10 percent of the market share in fabless firms by 2030, while staying in the top spot in the memory chip business.”
Fabless firms are companies which design microchips but contract out their production rather than owning their own factories.
While outlining a strategic vision to ramp up the system semiconductor industry the president stressed that the government will focus on investing in talent and technology by expanding research and development resources for the non-memory sector.
Touting the immense growth potential by pointing out the system semiconductor market is one-and-a-half times larger than the regular memory chip market,… Moon promised full-fledged support.
“Its growth potential is infinite. If utilized throughout the entire industrial field in the future, like robots and automobiles, by the year 2022 the market will have grown to reach 300 trillion won. (US $257 bil.)”
The president’s visit is seen as part of the administrations’ resolve to foster the country’s future economic growth engines, like bio-health and future automobiles in a bid to diversify business portfolios.
Leading chip and smartphone maker Samsung Electronics released its dismal first quarter operating profits just hours before Moon’s remarks,… bolstering the president’s call for a diversification of the nation’s growth engines.
