Chapchar Kut, also known as the spring festival of Mizoram, India is the most popular and major festival of the Mizos and perhaps the biggest and most successful outdoor event in Mizoram. It is celebrated annually in Aizawl, the capital city and hub of Mizoram. The tradition of celebrating Chapchar Kut evolved between 1450 -1600 A.D, also making it the oldest festival of Mizoram. Chapchar Kut is celebrated in the month of March. This year it was held at the Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl on the 2nd of March, 2012. This Chapchar Kut kicks off with the arrival of guests. The VIP's include a list of cabinet ministers,Chief Minister Lalthanhawla, Vako Purushothaman, the Governor of Mizoram and the visiting Director of the North East Zone Cultural Society (NEZCC), Som Kamei.

The programme starts with the Bawhhla or Hlado - a kind of victory chant honouring the forefathers, followed by an Opening song by the Central Young Mizo Association. The main highlight of Chapchar Kut is the famous Bamboo dance, locally known as 'Cheraw' - the traditional mass bamboo dance of Mizoram, without which the festival would be incomplete. It is worth citing that Mizoram at the moment holds the World Record for mass bamboo dance. The list of performers who took the stage by storm includes Mizo rock stars and pop like Judith Lalremruati, Lalthuthaa, Elizabeth Zodinpuii, X Strings, Dream Hunter and Scavenger Project. Besides the song and dance performances, the other popular events were the traditional sports exhibition, Arts and handicrafts display emphasizing the importance of preserving Mizoram's rich cultural heritage and identity, Bihu dance from Assam and a Traditional Costume Show by Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Meghalaya under North East Zone Cultural Society.

The rolling green hills as far as the eye can see and it's pleasant climate. If relaxing and peaceful vacations is what you have in mind, Mizoram has to be the place. It definitely will be a memorable journey that you will never forget.
