The hoopoe is a colourful medium sized bird. It's size is about 30 cm and it has a long, slender and gently curved bill. The diet of the Hoopoe is mostly composed of insects, although small reptiles and frogs are often included. It is named for its call, "hoo-poo." It has a showy, semicircular crest and mixed reddish-brown, black, and white plumage. The bill is long and curved, the legs short. Its tail is wedge-shaped. Common Hoopoe (Upopa epops) is a very common breeding resident, found in the wooded and open areas of the entire Indian subcontinent, from the high Himalaya to Kerala. Locally called 'Hudhud', it is a fawn colored bird with black and white zebra stripes on its back.
