Right, there's about 6-hundred and 40 Seowons left in Korea. This Sosu Seowon was selected as one of 9 Seowons considered for the UNESCO list because it is the first academy to be established and be recognized by the King. In order to be recognized as a world heritage site, the properties should have 'Outstanding Universal Value.'
Seowons show the typical private education system of the Joseon Dynasty. As a center of local society and education, it produced collections of literary works and was a gathering place for intellectuals. And Seowons have retained their unique architectural style which is suitable for diffusion of Confucianism in the rural areas of Korea. And the most outstanding feature of Seowons is that they were built in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.
