First Image of a Blackhole
Is Captured by Astronomers The remarkable image is of a massive black hole in the Messier 87 galaxy. Captured in the image
is the black hole's accretion disk:
a ring of gas and dust that "feeds" the black hole. Sheperd Doeleman, EHT, via 'The Gaurdian' Messier 87 is
55 million light years
away from Earth. Scientists estimate that
the equivalent of six billion
suns of light and matter has
disappeared into the black hole. The image was captured
by a network of eight radio
telescopes spread across the globe. Comprised of more
than 200 scientists,
the network is known as
Event Horizon Telescope. Black holes were first predicted
by Einstein's theory of relativity.
