It’ll Be Alright
First Move
Trouble Is
Singer-songwriter STACEY is a romantic for the apocalypse generation. Her 2017 sophomore EP First Move allows a rare glimpse into the dark, solitary lucid daydreams of a Lynchian heroine, and a look at her private landscape echoing with vintage soul tracks streamed from satellites.
In contrast to her self-titled debut EP’s stripped down, piano and vocals minimalism, First Move blooms with luxurious production, yet perfectly retains STACEY’s classical meets contemporary voice as a songwriter, leading listeners through bittersweet emotional journeys as rich with tragic stoicism as with longing and desire. First Move, coming fall 2017, echoes with the heartbeat of the hardened romantic and an astute post-smartphone understanding that detachment must quickly follow each new sorrow, yet a life lived without feeling present in moments of shame, guilt, sadness, and rejection, in all their embarrassing messiness, is a life unlived.
STACEY’s adept refraction of classic lyrical themes through her unique, brooding, and vulnerable voice is matched by her natural gift for minor-key melodies and a lavish vocal phrasing that balances irony and the saccharine, invoking a tear soaked, rose scented atmosphere that intoxicates yet never overwhelms, both on her recordings, and at her floral themed live shows.
Based in Toronto, STACEY received glowing press for her 2015 debut self-titled EP and remix EP from Pigeons & Planes, Impose, IndieShuffle, and Stereofox, while her soul-stirring, captivating live presence has led her to share stages with Charlotte Day Wilson, Cameron Avery, Lenka, and Emilie & Ogden. STACEY’s songs have soundtracked TV programs including Lucifer, Orphan Black, and MTV Scream, and since spring 2017, title track “First Move,” released via LadyGunn, has amassed over 100K streams on Spotify.
First Move was mixed by Juno winner Jason Dufour (Coleman Hell / Lights / July Talk) and produced by Derek Hoffman (Ralph / The Elwins) and Alan Day (Four Year Strong), who discovered STACEY on Instagram in 2016, as STACEY recalls:
“Alan found my video of me singing First Move in my bedroom in his Instagram explore feed. We organized a session at Derek’s studio, which was conveniently (and unbeknownst to me) located across the street from my apartment in Parkdale. We got together a few months later to make the rest of the EP.”
Right-swiping fans of old Hollywood and subtly concealing the hearts on their sleeves should anticipate thoughtful grandeur and ready for repeated, cathartic late night sojourns when rendezvousing with First Move.
