Thirty people, 27 firefighters and three locals, were killed while fighting a forest fire in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan after winds unexpectedly shifted. The fire broke out on March 30, 2019, in a remote area at an altitude of more than 3,800m (12,500 ft). The dead were among nearly 690 people who were sent to battle the fire. The cause of the blaze is yet to be confirmed.
