President Trump on Monday asserted that "very few" people in the US see special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election as legitimate. "Wow! A Suffolk/USA Today Poll, just out, states, '50% of Americans AGREE that Robert Mueller's investigation is a Witch Hunt.' @MSNBC Very few think it is legit! We will soon find out?" Trump tweeted. That poll, which involved 1,000 registered voters and was conducted from March 13 and March 17, also found that 47% of Americans view the investigation as being legitimate. USA Today reports that "there is, unsurprisingly, a stark partisan divide on that question: 86 percent of Republicans but just 14 percent of Democrats say Trump is the victim of a 'witch hunt.' Among independents, 54 percent say he is; 42 percent say he isn't." The president has put a notable amount of effort into discrediting the Mueller investigation. Among them is his mid-December tweet asserting: "The Russian Witch Hunt Hoax, started as the 'insurance policy' long before I even got elected, is very bad for our Country. They are Entrapping people for misstatements, lies or unrelated things that took place many years ago. Nothing to do with Collusion. A Democrat Scam!"
