SC to decide CBI Chief Ranjit Sinha’s fate

Describing as "serious" the allegation that CBI Director Ranjit Sinha met some controversial guests at his official residence, the Supreme Court on Monday sought an affidavit from him within a week with all facts "in black and white".

The apex court, while hearing pleas filed by advocate Prashant Bhushan seeking its directive to Sinha to recuse from the 2G and coal scam probe, also said that it can cancel all decisions made by the CBI chief if it is proved that he tried to scuttle a fair investigation.

Even as allegations of Ranjit Sinha interfering with scam probes flew thick and fast in the courtroom, noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani, who had appeared for three 2G scam accused Reliance Telecom officials and Shahid Balwa, was of the view that the CBI chief deserved a 'Bharat Ratna'.

Defending Sinha's controversial suggestion to then special public prosecutor U.U. Lalit (who is now a SC judge) to put on hold the trial against three Reliance officials Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair, Jethmalani said the CBI chief was only trying to 'come to the aid of innocents'.
