Senior lawyer Gopal Subramaniam, who was Solicitor General for the previous UPA government, today withdrew from the race to become Supreme Court judge citing a "dirt-digging exercise" by the new government.
In a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Mr Subramaniam reportedly said he had learnt that the Law Minister had initiated an inquiry "with a clear mandate to describe me as unsuitable" and "my character and integrity do not need to be proved every morning."
He also said he had "serious doubts" about the new government's ability to "appreciate and respect the independence, integrity and glory" of the judiciary.
