The government is likely to seek clarification from the Supreme Court collegium on the nomination of senior advocate Gopal Subramaniam for judgeship of the apex court. His name was one of the four recommended by the SC.

Sources in the government said there were reservations in certain quarters on the recommendation of Subramaniam for judgeship for which the law ministry may seek clarification and ask for reconsideration.

The government was sitting on the file of latest recommendation made by the collegiums because of this reason, said an official. Since two of the four names suggested for SC judgeship are practicing lawyers, Intelligence Bureau verification is mandatory. In case a High Court judge is elevated to apex court no such formality is required.
