Union Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Saturday hinted at a hike in passenger fares in order to shore up the capital base and provide better facilities to passengers.
Interacting with reporters at Mangalore International Airport, Gowda recollected that the previous Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge had increased the passenger fare by 10 per cent in the supplementary budget. But the hike in passenger fare was never implemented.
"If our government implements the hike, we will have to face charges on having increased passenger fares," he said and added that passenger fares have to be hiked without burdening the passenger.
He strongly justified Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in railways. The priority before the ministry is mopping up resources. The government with public participation will implement the projects. The demand for introducing bullet and high-speed trains will be discussed with experts. Gowda said he was committed to fulfil the demands of the state.
