It is for the first time that "son of the soil" is seeking election to the Lok Sabha from his home constituency of Udhampur or for that matter from Jammu and Kashmir. Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad whose first political assignment was the block Congress committee secretary in Bahlesa, his native place, in this hilly district of J&K has clear-cut edge over other candidates in the fray, including the BJP's Dr Jitendra Singh.
After Congress decided to field Ghulam Nabi Azad from neighbouring Udhampur, he started spending most of the time in Jammu rather than his own constituency. "Azad is a leader who commands respect from all sections of the people in the region," says lawyer Syed Asim. "He definitely will have the impact on Jammu."
