Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will on Saturday visit Gujarat and tour the historic Bardoli region where a 'satyagraha' by farmers was led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1928, party leaders said on Thursday.
Gandhi will also visit the historic Swaraj Ashram dedicated to the Bardoli Satyagraha and is a major tourist attraction.
Later in the afternoon, he will address a public meeting at the Murari Bapu grounds here, according to an announcement by Gandhi's office.
Bardoli, around 35 km from the diamond capital of Surat, is famous for the Bardoli Satyagraha led by Patel.
In a setback to BJP ahead of its rally on Saturday to be addressed by Narendra Modi, the Vaiko-led MDMK, which has struck an alliance with it for the Lok Sabha polls, has reservations about attending the meet. Talks with potential allies PMK and DMDK have been dragging on, even as a broad agreement on the choice of seats to be contested is yet to be reached with BJP trying to accommodate smaller parties. Konganadu Makkal Katchi was the latest to join the BJP-led alliance on Thursday and is seeking one seat.
Vaiko who donned the role of main campaigner for Modi in Tamil Nadu, is believed to be upset with BJP since he felt he was not treated well. "We got a call from our headquarters on Thursday.
