"This was a possibility that was raised and discussed," a government source said, suggesting that the UPA could take a firm call on the Congress' suggestion for an inquiry commission within the next week or so.

Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had claimed the home ministry was still examining demands for a probe into the stalking of the young woman forwarded by Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Two news portals had on November 15 made public tapes in which BJP general secretary Amit Shah is purportedly heard directing police to put a young woman and a senior IAS officer under illegal surveillance in 2009 when he was Gujarat's minister of state for home.

Investigative news websites Gulail and Cobrapost played out to the media a series of conversations in Gujarati, which they claim were between Shah and the then SP in the state's anti-terrorism squad GL Singhal.

Shah is allegedly heard telling Singhal to deploy adequate number of policemen to keep a strict vigil on the woman and intercept her phone calls.

The case took a fresh turn on Wednesday after the Gulail released 39 new tapes and claimed she was spied on in Bangalore too.

The new tapes revealed officials of private mobile service companies were involved with the Gujarat police in facilitating interception of the woman's mobiles and also illegally taping conversation without authorization from the Gujarat home secretary.
