With onion prices continuing to be on fire in the run-up to crucial state polls, an embattled government scrambled to stem the surge but appeared to lack a coherent plan.
With onion price in Delhi making headlines after it inched closer to the Rs. 100-mark, traders here are attributing this the nationwide increase in the price due to shortage and also poor quality. Demand from north and eastern States for Karnataka onions has also pulled up the price here, traders say.
Common excuse made by the government is that the onion crops are destroyed because of cyclone and floods but what of those millions of tonnes which were stored and saved months prior to that.
