The government convened an all-party meeting yesterday ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament to seek opposition's support for the smooth conduct of proceedings in both the houses. Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan also called a meeting of leaders of political parties in the house. While the opposition parties agreed with the government's submission on allowing smooth functioning of Parliament some parties questioned the government's decision to advance the budget just ahead of Elections in 5 states. But the government was clear about its stand saying it's the nation's budget which has nothing to do with state elections. With the Budget Session of the Parliament set to begin today, it remains to be seen if a larger consensus on the country's financial blueprint will emerge.
