Even as it waits for the missing Coalgate files, CBI's probe into the scandal in the allocation of coal blocks has hit another hurdle because of Centre's stand not to let the agency question three top bureaucrats who had held crucial positions during the period under investigation. Sources said the move was turned down recently and that the agency will inform the Supreme Court about it at the next hearing on Coalgate set for September 10. While permission to question Sampath and Brahma was declined on the ground that they hold constitutional positions, no reason was given for turning down the agency's request to examine Nair.
