The office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on Wednesday by the Home Ministry on the lynching of 52-year-old Mohammed Akhlaq over rumours that his family had stored and consumed beef in Dadri, 30 km from New Delhi, last week. The briefing to Modi's office came shortly after the Home Ministry received a report from the Uttar Pradesh government over the killing. Without mentioning the word "beef", the report said Akhlaq was killed following allegations that his family had consumed the meat of a banned animal.
