In a morale-boosting performance ahead of assembly polls, the opposition Congress in Karnataka today put up an impressive show in the elections to urban local bodies, leaving JDS and the ruling BJP way behind. With results in around 4,500 wards of a total of nearly 5000 announced this afternoon, the Congress, clearly benefiting from multi-cornered contests, bagged more than 1,800 wards, while JDS of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda came second with some 870. The ruling BJP finished third with 800-plus wards in it kitty. Heavyweight B S Yeddyurappa, who quit BJP late last year and floated Karnataka Janatha Paksha, seems to have played spoilsport for the ruling party, as also BSR Congress of former BJP Minister B Sriramulu.
