A big setback for Narendra Modi on the Lokayukta appointment row. The Supreme Court has upheld the Gujarat High Court order validating the appointment of retired judge R A Mehta as state Lokayukta. The Supreme Court on holding that the appointment was cleared by Gujarat High Court Chief Justice, however agreed that the Governor should act on the advice of the council of ministers. The Gujarat government had argued that the appointment was done unilaterally by Governor Beniwal. The Gujarat High Court had upheld Governor Beniwal's decision last January.
