Hit by a constant stream of allegations of corruption and financial impropriety, the Congress government at the centre has said that the RTI law was being misused. Speaking at a function organised by the Central Information Commission, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that "there are concerns about frivolous and vexatious use of the act in demanding information disclosure of which cannot possibly serve any public purpose." He said the law needed to be circumscribed if it encroached upon a person's privacy. Two days back, the Prime Minister had also warned that an atmosphere of "mindless negativity" over corruption would damage the country's image.
