After petrol, the government is now likely to deregulate diesel prices. However there is no such proposal for cooking gas just yet. The government's subsidy bill to keep retail prices of diesel below market rates have been increasing, owing to rising prices of crude in global market. The government has been contemplation on decontrolling prices for some time. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the decision was agreed to in principle last year itself.
