South Sudan becomes world's newest nation

The world will welcome the latest entrant into the comity of nations, South Sudan as the region gains independence on 9th July. It is a well-deserved victory for the people of South Sudan. Under a 2005 American-backed political accord that ended two decades of civil war, the people of the mainly Christian territory voted overwhelmingly in January this year to secede from the Arab Muslim north.
