Congress Passes Bill to Stop
President Trump's National Emergency The resolution did not get enough support to override a veto from
the president. The bill must now be voted on by the Senate within three weeks. Should it pass with 51 votes, it would then be sent to the president. The legislation was brought up after Trump said he would divert funds
from government programs to build his proposed
U.S.-Mexico border wall. The president declared the emergency after failing to negotiate a deal for border funding
with Congress. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats have since called Trump's move unconstitutional. 16 U.S. states have also sued over the declaration, saying Trump is trying to exceed his
presidential powers.
