There is a short tale mentioned in Ganesha Purana, where Tulsi is called Vrinda in her human life.
Vrinda once came across Lord Ganesha, who was deeply engaged in meditation and was captivated by his beauty.
She requested Lord Ganesha to take her as his wife, to which he politely refused.
Lord Ganesha mentioned that he could only marry a match like his parents, Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.
Vrinda couldn’t bare the rejection and cursed that Lord Ganesha will get married against his will.
Few scriptures also state that Ganesha refused because of the vow of celibacy, which was breached because of Vrinda’s curse.
Lord Ganesha got annoyed by this and cursed her to be married to an Asura (demon) in
near future.
Ganesha’s anger was only pacified, when Vrinda realized her mistake she prayed for forgiveness.
He cited that she will be transformed into a sacred plant (Tulsi) and will please all the Gods (except him).
Lord Ganesha also stated that her leaves will not be accepted while worshiping him.
